Help solve the mystery of the excited ice cube

Sorry for the graphic photo, but I just have to try to find out what's causing random ice cubes in my freezer to behave this way. It doesn't happen every time I fill the tray and, as best I can recall, it only happens to one ice cube at a time.

Any ideas on what might be causing this? My best guess is that it's the combination of traces of Viagra and caffeine in our groundwater making it into our tap water...

I just read this at my desk as I was awaiting toastier toast, and roared laughing so loudly that co-workers immediately came running in hopes of finding some relief from the mundane number-crunching. We all giggled profusely. Thanks!

I have no clue what would cause that, but am very curious! Keep me posted on your findings!

I find the answer!

How to Make an Ice Spike

Will is the winner! Of course, this means that my freezer just happens to be -7 degrees Celsius and that I have distilled water coming out my tap... Or maybe it works in conditions slightly outside those specified. Pretty wacky that it only happens to one cube out of the twelve when they all contain the same water at the same temperature.

Who knew water could be so much fun!

Thanks, Linda! :-)

YAY Will! That's rad. I think I'm going to go home and reset the freezer temp in hopes of making some 'excited ice' with which to boggle the roommates' minds tonight!!!

Hey now, that would be a pretty amusing set of ice cubes for parties, or just romantic evenings at home? I can see it now: pineapple, oysters, and 'excited ice'...

Oh man! And here I thought I was going to be special, getting my link to the ice spikes the quickest. You guys are so scientific.

Just as a follow up, I came home to a very excited (although curved) ice cube in my freezer today. First time... *blush*

cool, but why only 1 out of the 12?

nice site..
